Evening all.

New to this thread.

Does anyone have any strong opinions about me buying this watch from endless? HugoBoss, leather strap, "rose gold case", $275.

I know that HugoBoss is a fashion brand and not a watch brand but I like the simple design of the watch face and the colour of the housing looks nice (on the web photo at least).

Also the budget is good for me.

Is there anything else I should consider before plunging? I am looking for something simple and bold looking, leather strap, for less than $300.

Thanks all

Personally you are paying for a name not a watch and would look at Seiko or Citizen for functionality you can always buy a leather strap for it.

True. Admittedly though I am only buying a watch to wear when I get dressed for things like dinner and clubbing. I am not going to wear a watch to work.

I like the BOSS watch because it looks nice.

The seiko watches on watchco look ok too (and less expensive too!)

They all seem around the $150 mark. Seems pretty reasonable.

But I can't get past how nice the BOSS looks in rose gold for $250.

For me to be interested a watch must have a sweep second hand, metal strap, day/date, and marked in minute increments. But, if you like it then go for it. I recently bought a Citizen eco drive for $158.00 (on a cruise ship) which I think is a good looking watch and no batteries to fiddle around with.

Looking at these citizen watches in watchco I can't help but be impressed with the savings on the RRP.

Do shops here really sell the same watches for that RRP?

I had a look in the window of my local jewellery store today and saw quite a large range of citizen watches. Some going to the $700+ area but also many cheaper ones for $150-400 that looked similar to what they sell on watchco.

Is watchco really a good deal?

Any other online retailers? Specifically after a citizen.

Yes, they do. I saw a Citizen BM7081-54E at a local jeweller for $550, which I ended up buying from a Singapore wholesaler for $168 including free shipping via Fedex.

The typical markup for a watch in Australia is in excess of 100-150% – have you ever wondered why many jewellers regularly have 50% off sales?

Is watchco really a good deal?

I haven't dealt with watchco personally but from all that I've been able to discern they're a legitimate business. For alternatives I suggest looking at Creation Watches, Sky Watches or Watches 88 – they all stock a decent range of Eco-Drives at good prices.

Personally, I would avoid the 'Bay'. Heard about too many scams that have occured on there, additionally, I read that the insurance for watches when shipping is really dodgy:

http://forums.watchuseek.com /f2/if-lost-did-usps-paid-up-337959.html

Now, I am not in the market for high end watches (at the moment), so haven't done much research in this field.

Good luck and be sure to post pics if you eventually do acquire one.

You would be correct in assuming that you would be relatively safe from scams etc on eBay, particulalry if paying with PayPal. Postal/shipping insurance is largely not your concern if you are buying through eBay. If your item does not turn up then you file a claim with PayPal/eBay and you are almost certain to get your money back.

This is the main advantage with ebay over buying from a private seller on a forum. Whilst the majority of forum sellers are honest, there are a number of things that are outside of their control, the main one being shipping. FedEx, UPS, DHL etc. all specifically exclude watches and jewellery on their insurance. If you are sending from Australia via Express Courier International or from overseas to Australia by any service which utilises the EMS courier system (as does Express Courier International) then watches/jewellery are specifically excluded.

If you buy an item and it goes missing in transit then with eBay you can make a claim, with a private seller you have to sort it out with the seller. I really have no idea why people still insist that doing business with private individuals on forums is safer than eBay purchases.

Shipping aside, with eBay you are also able to make a claim for goods that you purchase that are not as described (fake/counterfeit/not working). Again, try claiming for this against an individual.

Remember that any imported item over $1000 will be subject to GST and administration charges for collecting the GST.

Supercilious comments welcome. Chill out. Some people will always have different views to you. http://forums.watchuseek.com/f63/ As I think I exclaimed earlier; it's about your personal take on risk regarding Ebay vs. forums. "Let the buyer beware" would be a more diplomatic and helpful comment.

A lot of watches don't see Ebay because they are sold on forums. Collectors see Ebay as a last resort. Also, collectors tend to look after their watches.

Do you have an Ebay business selling watches?

I have a business selling watches. About 7-8% are sold through eBay.

My eBay business is small enough to be negligible but I do pick up international customers that I would otherwise not. In short I am not here to spruik eBay but I have enough experience on and off of it to be able to comment with some degree of Authority.

Over the last few years I had had perhaps 5-6 watches 'go missing'. Most of them were through forums, I only recovered money on one. All were from trusted and genuine sellers. Before you ask, I can factor in a number of losses per year. Two losses were through eBay, I recovered money on both of those. This is still a relatively small number, perhaps one half of one percent of all watches that I have had incoming via post/courier so take it as you see it and balance whether you feel that is an acceptable risk.

Additionally I have received many pieces that I would not resell or want to keep if I were buying personally. In December I picked up a GMT II-C with a bridge that was not genuine (how on earth this happened is a complete mystery) ($1400 fix as Rolex will not replace without a service) and a PAM 243 with a broken (stuck) lug quick release (with Richemont for quote but potentially needs a new case (start thinking around $3000+)). If you had bought either of these how would you return them for a refund (assuming you were offered one) given you can't send them with any insurance? I believe both were sold by genuine sellers, neither of whom are too keen on giving me my money back.

I could give you a list of dozens of people I know who have either been swindled deliberately or had a package not turn up having paid for it. Again, you can recover easily through an eBay sale. You can't privately – you rely almost entirely on goodwill and lots of it.

Years ago I spoke to my FedEx account manager about FedEx not insuring jewellery/watches and she told me the reason was that packages marked as watch/jewellery were 8-10 times more likely to go missing than other items, they simply could not afford to insure them.

There is no point in showing all of the good guys that are dealing in the forums. I would not dispute that they are genuine and honest. I have dealt with many of them and continue to do so. This misses my point entirely.

Collectors I deal with would certainly not see eBay as a place of last resort and I deal with many. In fact most of the collectors I know would be just the opposite and see the forums as a place of last resort.

The facts are quite simple. If you buy privately, and things go wrong, then the chances of getting your money back are very very slim. Buy through eBay and your chances are extremely high. If you are buying lots of watches then perhaps taking the risk buying privately is worth it. If you have saved all year and you are buying one watch then indeed, BUYER BEWARE. You may save on a good timepiece but if that package goes astray then you can almost certainly say goodbye to your money.

There are definitely good watches to be had from great people on the forums. Just be aware of the risks before you part with your hard earned cash. Nearly all of the watches are from private individuals, and if you are happy to send your money and hope you get what you paid for then that is great, go for it.

Not sure if this thread is the right place for this as I am only after an everyday watch (ideally less than $250, but perhaps up to $500) to replace a 10 year old Citizen Eco-Driver. I am not after any of the high end stuff I have read about in many posts on this thread. Anyway, what I am after is a watch with a really clean, "minimalist" dial/face. That is, I don't need number from 1 – 12. I don't even need marks. I am not interested in the date or the day. Really, I just need the clock hands. I can work it out from there.

Hey Zelig, did you find anything yet?

The watch was a Breitling Aerospace worn by Eddie Izzard. It could have been because it was a white face and the digital bits stuck out.

Usually buy watches from overseas. Prices are usually best. Paypal sides with the buyer, sometimes unfairly from reading some watch forum threads, so use it where you can. If buying privately, follow DJ_m's advice and remember there are scammers out there. Some people have lost $5k too easily!

This is a good one. I like the Norwegian attitude!

To save people reading the thread – the scammer is Norwegian. The honest Norweagians are not happy and have offered to pay the scammer a visit. It seems the money is being returned.

Dj_m, thanks for that info. Do you know of any postal services that will provide insurance on a watch purchased privately from the US and shipped to Australia?

If you are sending out of Australia then nobody will insure you. You can declare the value on the package and write watch on the paperwork but you are signing to say you have read the terms which clearly exclude watches. Within Australia, Express Post Platinum or Registered will give you up to $5000 but it is expensive.

From the US I am fairly sure that USPS (Australia Post equivalent) are the only option for insurance. Check usps.com for further information. Unfortunately you won't be covered for a blatant attempt to defraud you such as the old rock in a box trick. You are only insured for non-delivery.

Remember also that if it is insured then it will have the declared value on the box so be prepared for GST.

The old adage of 'buy the buyer first' is your best bet. Make sure you get a verifiable work email address, full name, ideally a copy of their drivers licence (a phone photo MMS or email). If they don't want to give you this then I would walk away, an honest seller should be happy to provide you with all of this. Essentially ask yourself 'can I trace this person if things go wrong?'. Of course actually being able to trace them is not much good to you but making the seller jump through some hoops will weed out some of the scammers.

Next to none.

If I were you I would try and get the watch to a place that can do a pressure test on the watch before you go back to TAG. If you can get somewhere that uses a machine with a print-out then even better. If the crown (winder) is pushed closed and the watch fails a 50m test then you have more chance of getting a replacement. If the watch is not watertight as it should be at least you have a case to argue and will have some proof. Once they have the watch they can tell you anything and I would not trust the technicians doing the work.

If the watch passes a test then you have a problem. It is likely you have had the watch come in to contact with water with the crown open. It is easy for them to test for this by performing a simple pressure test. If they know the watch is watertight with the crown closed then it can only have happened with the crown in the open position or at some depth (or in rough water etc.)...either way it would be your problem. Carreras only have minimal (50m) water resistance which is good for no more than hand washing etc.

If you have water inside then hopefully it is literally just a minute amount. If there is more then the movement will likely be corroding as we speak. You may also see the hands and markers start to corrode quickly (within a few hours), look very very closely to see if they are marked. Normally water inside will require new hands/dial as well.

It is probably too late now but for future reference. If you ever see moisture inside your watch then open the crown and put the watch in a bowl of rice (uncooked!), make sure it is covered in rice. Leave it there until you get to a watchmaler. If it is only a very small amount of moisture then the rice should absorb it within a day, it may buy you enough time to get professional help.

Thanks DJ_m,

The watch is a Tag Heuer Carrerra Day/Date Chrono – 100m.

I've been monitoring the watch for the past few days and it seems that the fog / moisture only happens when i'm wearing the watch. If I leave it out there is no moisture underneath the crystal face.

The moisture only happens on the front of the watch and there seems to be no moisture at the back plate from what I can see which also has a sapphire window.

There doesn't seem to be any water present only a slight "fog" underneath the face of the watch which makes it a bit blurry.

Hopefully it isn't too bad of a problem and isn't corroding.

Based on the style and a similar price range $5-700 does anyone have any recommendations?

I purchased a Tissot PRC 200 through Amazon last year. Was about USD$300 which is subsantially cheaper than Australia. Very happy with the watch and get many positive comments about it (ie. is that a Brietling?) haha.

Sounds like it has some moisture in the case but just a tiny amount, likely not enough to do any damage but obviously you should still get it seen to. Where do you live? Are you in far north QLD or other tropical area?

I live in the Sydney CBD area.

I've read that moisture/fog can happen if there is a sharp temperature change.. but I haven't exactly jumped out from a freezer into a sauna and I always make sure I keep the crown closed before washing my hands etc so i'm really baffled.

I am a Watch Collector and i get a lot of watches that have had water/ moisture in them usually caused buy old/faulty seals, if you buy a second hand watch it would pay to get all seals replaced the get it pressure tested.
I mainly collect Seiko watches either Chrono's or Divers i do not sell or trade my watches, always on the look out for old seiko's, i pay good money.

Hi Whirlpoolians,
I am looking for a watch that can be used when i'm fishing, boating, swimming at the beach etc.

The features I would like in the watch in my order of preference are:

Tide Information
Barometer
Compass
Thermometer

The best watches I can find are the Casio Pro Trek's. I have found these watches have everything I want plus more:

http://www.casio-intl.com/wa t/watch_detail/?m=PRG-250-1A&n=1610

http://www.casio-intl.com/wa t/watch_detail/?m=PRG-250T-7&n=1430

http://www.casio-intl.com/wa t/watch_detail/?m=PRG-130T-7V&n=1046

My concern is and I am ashamed to say, is that I have small wrists. My wrist size is: 16.5cm, I have not as yet tried any of these watches on however I would imagine these watches to be big and almost unwearable for me.

So what I am after is opinions on the above watches and/or suggestions of other watches that may have the features I am after but in a smaller form factor.

If there are none out there I will consider purchasing one of the above and just try to get used to it.

All your opinions/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I suggest you try them in store to accurately gauge the fit. You can also find Velcro band that could work better on your wrist.

The thermometer doesn't work properly on the wrist.

Update: I've taken the watch back to the Tag Heuer store and they have put the watch into service to get the moisture out. I forgot to mention a pressure test but will call them about it later and see if they can get that done too.

Their customer service have been pretty good so far, took the watch in and without any question they put it into service and marked it as 'Urgent' as I've only had the watch for less than 2 months.

Now just have to wait and see on how the watch turns out.

g'day maxgeo

i like the idea of a fishing watch – never thought about it before.
those ones you listed seem to be the "complete package"

there are others out there that just do tides, or barometer, or moon phase (like rip curl, nixon – quick google search turned these up)

even found some automatic watches with tide complications. moon phase complications seem to be more common.

as for size – ive got 18cm wrists and wouldnt wear a watch below 40cm. i tried on a 47cm diver and found that too big so for you wearing a 53cm beast – yeah id consider that almost unwearable. Guess you'd have to try it on 1st. Id assume you'd only be wearing it to go fishing so the size wouldnt matter that much

... or you could just get a smartphone ;)

My Eco-Drive watch served me well for almost 10 years before it started to lose charge / not re-charge / stop working.

Stopped using it about 4 months ago after being told it would probably cost more to fix than replace.

When I finally started looking around at replacements at Xmas, I got it back out to compare the size/design to some of the others I was looking at. Put it out in the sun to charge it up and decided to whack it on my wrist after being watch-less for 4 months.

That was on 28 December. Almost a month later, it is still going great. Hasn't missed a beat. Hasn't lost any time and I am no longer searching for a replacement.

I got given 20% at Hour Glass without hesitation, but I can get 25% off in Hong Kong.

Ebay may be your best bet, and also on the sales forums of various watch sites. Like any luxury watch brand, official TAG bands are expensive. Its up to you whether you will pay the premium, or find a quality third party item.

hi all

im STILL looking for my 1st watch. seems like ages, but ive narrowed it down to these 2.

http://www.omegawatches.com/ gents/seamaster/planet-ocean /22015000
http://www.omega watches.com/gents/seamaster/300-m-chrono-diver

i love em both, but i cant make my mind up.
they're both around the 2400-2600 mark, 2nd hand, so price isnt really a deciding factor

Im fairly sporty / active so the chrono function would come in handy. whereas the ceramic bezel on the PO would prob last longer. i love the 2sided coating on the crystal on the PO but then again it scratches easier (apparently)...

In terms of longevity / future demand (incase i want to sell it later on) – which of the above 2 would hold up better

(ps: im leaning the PO way)

the cheap Chinese stuff (with I also have) just isn't fine enough and doesn't work.

He'll sell you spring bars and straps too and his postage is very very low for a US guy.

Agreed, if you are going to be working on a good, expensive watch then go with that model (if you are purchasing from somewhere else, make sure it is the F, Fine model).

Anybody had any experience with HMT watches? Know of any good sites to buy them from (or even just look at the various models)?

Cheers.

Does anyone know what watch was Novak Djokovic wearing during the Australian Open?

Looks very nice – not that I can afford one, of course.

AP Royal Oak. Not sure which variation but does come with rubber strap and possibly DLC case or was it just reflections. Don't think his was a chronograph.

$7900 here but looking at getting it in Hong Kong in a few months time or waiting till 2013 when I'm in the states.

I don't think Hong Kong will be cheaper, unless you either have contacts with a distributor or know people who are regulars at an AD. All the stores just offer you the standard flat discount no matter, which one you try or I just have bad luck.

$7,900 – that's interesting, since that would be the same price as the regular hour vision?

Edit: Euro 4250... damn that seems rather cheap...

im STILL looking for my 1st watch. seems like ages, but ive narrowed it down to these 2.

http://www.omegawatches.com /gents/seamaster/planet-ocea n/22015000
http://www.om egawatches.com/gents/seamaster/300-m-chrono-diver

i love em both, but i cant make my mind up.
they're both around the 2400-2600 mark, 2nd hand, so price isnt really a deciding factor

The Chrono function on the 300m watch won't be much good to you for sports activities. You'll find it way to heavy, cumbersome and potentially injure you or someone else with it.

The PO is lighter and slimmer than the 300m chrono but wider. The version you are looking at does not have a ceramic bezel it is painted aluminum the same as the 300m. The PO you are looking at is a discontinued model. There is a new version of the PO with the in-house 8500 movement but you won't get in to one of those for less than $6000.

Even considering the above the PO will likely hold up better than the 300m on resale value but as always will depend on condition etc. They will both do ok. You should buy the one that appeals the most as a few hundred dollars here or there when you come to sell it won't make up for wishing you owned a different watch.

I took my Rado to them for a service a few years back and never again.

I too have been disappointed with the Swatch Service on my Rados. Long service times, "high" cost etc. However it seems that the NSW operation has moved to Melbourne and on the last repair/battery change they actually did a good job and I now have an "as new" 18 year old watch.

Somehow they were able to replace the baclet link that was chiped, replace the pitted hands and face (from a previous water ingress incident) and fix the loose clasp. All problems that previously were "impossible" as "parts not available"

Of course there was a bill but all things considered I'm happy this time.

On a side note about repairs – if anyone has a Seiko watch, that needs repair (particularly new movement), I'd reccomend a holiday in Bangkok. The Seiko repair centre there gives quotes on the spot and takes about 2 weeks for most repairs – new movements in two divers watchs cost my friend $110 each wheras he had been quoted upwards of $350 per watch by Seiko Australia. You get the broken parts back so you know the repair has been done with new bits. The downside is they won't post back to Aus. so you have to hope the repair is done while you are there or have a second trip – lets you seek out that bargain Rolex !!
