The Omega Seamaster Quartz Mariner Saga - I, II and III

Also posted on Vintage Omega Forum and by BestofWatch blog

For some reason I've recently become fond of the Omega "Mariner" watches of the late great 70s so I thought I'd put my notes together not having found an existing topic.

    Here's what I have so far :
    1. Mariner (I) : Mens Cal. 1310 - Ladies Cal. 1320
    2. Mariner II : Mens Cal. 1320 - Ladies Cal. 1320
    3. Mariner III - Mens Cal. 1343 :

...and of course the great mighty : OMC ;-)

Let's dig in with the appropriate quotes from Omega's vintage site, currently being refurbished, but still available in its old version.

    1. Mariner (I) :
    a. Mens
    Case ref. (watchhead) = 196.0054
    Case : octogonal (11,7 x 39 x 42 mm), with 4 screws on bezel and Omega Quartz plate at 6 o'clock.
Bracelet : stainless steel, integrated, ref. 1268/241
    International Collection : 1975-1981
    Swiss retail price (1977) : CHF 1'000.-
Notes : there were some variations with a SS bezel and Quartz/Omega "plaque" and some certified as chronometers (Red emblem)

    b. Ladies
I saw this one on eBay and I can't find it on Omega's vintage site oddly enough
    Some info :
    - Caliber 1320 (like the Mariner II)
    - Dimensions : 35mm x 31mm
    - Reference : ST 396.0842
    - Case : 196.0056

    2. Mariner II
    a. Mens

Case : rectangular (11,1 x 29 x 39 mm), stainless steel with 14K solid gold bezel and plate, with attached SS bracelet of ref. ST 1267/241 or leather strap of 19 mm lug-size.
    Case ref. = ST 196.0050
    International Collection : 1976-1980
Swiss retail price (1976) : CHF 990.- (on steel bracelet)

    b. Ladies (?)
    Case : octogonal (10,8 x 30 x 36 mm), with 14K yellow gold bezel and plate.
For SS bracelet of ref. 5942/241 or leather straps of 19 mm lug-size.
    Case ref. : 196.0055
    International Collection : 1976-1978
Swiss retail price (1977) : CHF 856.- (on leather) or CHF 990.- (on SS bracelet).

    2. Mariner III
I'm calling it III because of it's appearance but it isn't its official name and again it's nowhere to be found on Omega's vintage site.
    Some info :
    - Caliber 1343
    - Date : 1979 for that particular model (45281624)
    - Dimensions : 40mm x 31mm
    - Reference : ST 398.0854
    - Case : 198.0019

In the movie SkyFall (2012), James Bond (Daniel Craig) once again wears an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean watch. Bond wears the watch in the Turkey scenes, together with a grey Tom Ford suit, Tom Ford cufflinks and Crockett & Jones Tetbury shoes.

The watch is an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 232.30.42.21.01.001. This is a steel version of the Planet Ocean with a 42mm case, black dial and steel bracelet. The text Seamaster on the dial is written in orange, and the second hand has an orange tip. The watch is still available online at JomaShop for $3895 (USA) or Ernest Jones for £4160 (UK).

This does look exactly like an image that was released earlier this year of Bond on a Honda CRF250R motorcycle wearing the watch (see image on the left).

There is now some confusion about if this is the actual exact watch worn by Bond because at the 50 Years of James Bond - The Auction at Christie's, Lot 45 is an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean which looks exactly the same as the watch mentioned above, but this one is, according to Christie's "a unique piece specially made in Titanium for action scenes in SkyFall". That this wasn't a mistake, was confirmed by a Christie's representative on Dell Deaton's James Bond Watches Facebook page. So Daniel Craig wore a Titanium watch, but the watch listed on Omega's website is a Steel version. It is currently still unclear if Omega intends to release a Titanium version, or if this Titanium version was only made for use in the filming of the movie SkyFall.

If you want to get your hands on the unique Titanium version which was actually worn by Daniel Craig during the filming of SkyFall, the Christie's charity auction is your chance.

Watch the Omega commercial for the Planet Ocean, which includes many SkyFall scenes, here:

    Features
Movement: Caliber Omega 8500 Water Resistence: 600 m (2000 feet)
    Chronometer
    Date
    Helium escape valve
    Screw-in crown
    Transparent case back
    Unidirectional rotating bezel

Omega released a "SkyFall" Limited Edition of the Planet Ocean, read more about that watch here.

In SkyFall, James Bond also wears an Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra watch. The character Eve (played by Naomie Harris) wears an Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Quartz, with black dial and steel case/bracelet.

The watch retails for approximately €4000 / £4000 / $5000, but it really depends on your location.

This watch has a smaller case than the Planet Ocean Big Size he wore in Casino Royale, and features a steel bracelet in stead of the rubber band in Casino Royale. Generally a more formal watch than the Big Size from Casino Royale and with the black bezel and dial a new style compared to the blue bezel and dial Seamasters seen in the Bond movies since 1995.

The recommended retail for this item is £2250. There are 1,200 reserved for the UK and 5007 made in total in the world.

the price of the standard version is around 2850€ and the price of the limited edition is around 3000€. prices have been requested in Austria.

i have just purchased this watch straight after watching the film this morning, limited edition and a very low number as well. rate it very nice watch

my wife got me the limited edition just yesterday and its bloody beautiful!!!

amaizing anniversary gift, now I owe her, jejej

I emailed Omega's London boutique to find out if Daniel Craig used the Planet Ocean with the 42mm or the 45.5mm case in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. They confirmed that Craig used the Planet Ocean 45.5mm version in both films.

    No that's mis-information!!!!

He wore the 45.5mm with rubber strap in Casino Royale and the 42mm with bracelet in Quantum of Solace.

Even the suppliers make mistakes but it was a 42mm

to be honest with you I bought my OMEGA but I got the one with the orange outer bezel (assume that is the name) because it caught my eye. I am registered blind and I find this such an easy watch to see. Oh incidentally yes it will set you back about £2250 but the quality and workmanship is breathtaking and I cannot praise these watches enough. Absoloutely exquisite quality. Bond has superb taste.

I bought this watch yesterday and the saleswoman said that Omega used the orange bevel (Planet Ocean) because the color orange is the last color you (the brain) see under water. --Interesting Fact
