    Re: Perfect Replica

Fakes are only fakes if they cost less, considerably less to make. Otherwise, why bother. People only buy replicas because they are cheap.

IF you were to buy a replica and payed the same price as the real thing, you have only yourself to blame. Part of this is buying the seller. Don't buy from anyone that you are not comfortable with, and know what you are selling. The hypothetical perfect clone should not exist, it is not profitable for the manufacturer.

This means they will never be perfect. Omega as an example does things to make their product expensive to clone. The Bezel Pearl is set with a small sapphire crystal to protect it. Their movements are very finely finished. The overall look of the watch is more professional in materials used. I could go on, but there is little profit trying to make a clone of a $2000 to $3000 dollar watch, when it would cost you a significant amount in Machine and tooling, and materials etc to manufacture such clones. Better off making your own brands.

Now, cloning a very rare vintage masterpiece on the other hand may be very profitable for someone and is quite possible and difficult to distinguish from the real thing. Hand made is hand made after all...

Not saying it can't be done, just that it defeats the purpose, except to show that they can do it, but they might as well make their own. It is unrealistic.

Unless management is in on it, I'd find that to be near impossible.

Can this be confirmed, or is this merely something someone heard their best friend's nextdoor neighbor's cousin say? I'd have to think that the consequences of getting caught red-handed in such a major act of fraud would have mind-blowing consequences for the employee and the dealership, not to mention the havoc it would create on a given watch company by undermining consumer confidence.

I'd be weary of making any such statement unless it could be proven to be true.

    Re: Perfect Replica

Having thought about this some, I reckon that it would be possible to make a $100 fake of, say an 1120 powered Seamaster Pro that was perfect both inside and out and still make a profit.

    Here's the reasoning:

Right now, you can buy an Alpha Seamater Pro homage from China for $50 with a bit of a search. The company itself sell them for $70 (including postage!) here:

Now, that gives us an idea of a baseline fake cost: around fifty dollars. Is it convincing? Well, not to an expert but that is only through a series of 'tells', giveaway clues, that are, thanks to this forum, common knowledge. Also as it happens the Seamaster clone feels a bit nasty in the hand, the weight is good but the finishing is poor and sharp edges abound. This is not true of all of Alpha's products; some feel near perfect.

Ok, so lets say I want to do the perfect fake. First I research WUS for half a day. This secondary research is cheap and quick and will give me a list of improvements I need to make. Making them over a long production run of perfect (and then significantly more valuable) fakes will not cost much, let's say it adds $5 a watch, which it wouldn't. We now have a watch which will fool anyone as long as you don't take the back off.

Now, you may feel this is unlikely, but it has already happened. It is considered recieved wisdom among Rolex owners that there are perfect copies of both the Datejust and the Explorer floating around out there. More to the point, I have to confess that, when I hold a $50 Alpha Explorer clone in one hand and an Explorer in the other I really do have to ask exactly how the remaining $3200 is justifiable when the Alpha is really quite so nice. Seriously, I recommend buying a $47 (from the factory) Alpha Explorer clone if only to realise just what a serious threat the Chinese almost pose to the Swiss. I'll say it again, it's a genuinely nice watch. Hard to believe, but true. A fake based on this or similar, would slip under my radar. In fact, fairly recently, one did:

    Tudor Unease...

Even after multiple expert opinions I was still not 100%. The movement was genuine, the rest of the watch was not. It was a lovely feeling watch and looked great. I coonfess, I'm not a Rolex Tudor expert but I reckon I'm pretty good at this game in general. If my intuition hadn't been tweaked, I wouldn't have asked and wouldn't have found out. Scary huh?

However, the answer for non Tudor Rolex owners is simple: open the back. The Chinese have never produced a credible copy of a Rolex movement. They may be able to put a good quality highbeat movment in but they will not be able to put one that looks right in. The only reason the Tudor could have a clone is that they are cheap. you can't get a decent Rolex movement for less that $1500 secondhand.

Returning to my perfect Seamaster fake. This is where the faker will have an ace up their sleeve: the Tianjin ST26. This movement, from the outside, looks identical to a 2892/2. The 2892/2 is the movement that the 1120 is based upon. All that will have to change is a little decoration and a different shaped rotor. Once again, this will cost a bit of money but there is still $45 a watch before you hit the $100 a watch. This asssumes that the Alpha costs $50 to produce, I suspect the real figure is far far lower.

Thus, the $100 perfect fake is a possibility. The only question is why they haven't done it... yet.

    Re: Perfect Replica

I feel like I could write pages on this topic, but in the end, it just is not realistic.

The tells of a fake are like trademarks to the artists that made them. These things are made cheap, the more of them they make the cheaper they become. If they are not 100% perfect, then it is arguable that they are not infringing on anyone's rights because they are obviously fake.

Yes it can be done. It would ruin the reason to own the watch. Remember the people that buy most of these fakes are on at least two levels:

    1. Would never spend more the $50 on any watch ever.
    2. Want the real thing but can't afford, so they buy the nicer $250+ fakes.

If they move out of either market, they loose their customer base and might as well have their own brand with advertising costs etc.

Making a nice watch does cost money. Even the $250+ fakes are still lower in materials and finish then the real thing and they have to be to still make a profit at that price. These things thrive because of their cost.

Sapphire crystals are expensive. AR coating is expensive. SuperLuminova is not cheap. Finishing a movement nicely, more costs. Fancy logos on the case. Raised markers on the dial. The more watches with these they make their cost comes down, but it cuts into their profits to make a watch that comes close to the real thing, as buyers draw the line in what they want to spend. The closer they get to the real thing, the more it cuts into their profits.

Make a $500 dollar fake look like the real thing, but your buyers would be reduced compared to the cheaper ones, and at this point, you might as well create your own line and advertise and sell to a new market. Selling high end fakes comes to a line drawn in the sand, where a buyer wants the best he can get, but might as well spend his money on the real thing.

Yes I feel strongly that it can be done, but not at a price they would be happy with, and this is why I feel the whole idea is unrealistic. As long as people want cheap, they have a market to sell to. Notice that not every Omega is cloned? They could do a Railmaster pretty easy I bet. But the guy in the alley don't know what a Railmaster is, might as well be a fake anyway. To catch you and I out on that Railmaster, we would not be buying from a back alley, and if on ebay we would need good photos of the movement blah blah blah... They target what is easy to sell and easy to recognize. Anything else hurts profit. These fakes exist because they are cheap, to the makers they are no different then a sports brand on a ball cap. Poor people want luxury goods too, it just has to look like it, be instantly recognizable, and be cheap. They just want to sell a product in our markets and others that is recognizable and cheap. They don't really want or need to copy them 100%, because that costs money. To them it is a logo. They don't want to make and sell a Rolex or Omega on an equal basis, they just want to use their recognizable names to sell their cheap products. It is easier to do this then sell their own product logos, advertising customs. They wouldn't do it, if the cheap didn't sell...

Making clones of vintage watches on the other hand, that is a different game of counterfeiting there and one with lots of potential to be very hard to figure out and profitable, but this would be done more on an individual basis then on a mass produced basis.

    Re: Perfect Replica

So you are worried you just spent $3000 on a fake. If they are 100% perfect, they would have to make a lot of them to make any money worth thier time. Your loss may be large, but thier profit would be very small.

If they make enough to support manufacture costs and make a nice, profit, how do they make them readily available to people who will spend $3000 on a watch? This alone is a logistical nightmare. If they make that many, they will be discovered, and the brand they are copying will provide a authenticity validation service... It just adds up to that line that is drawn. Once a fake, still a fake. Easier to be cheap and readily available then to be difficult.

It is one thing to fake s purse, it ia another to fake a watch.
